Snooper Tigre Review

This is different to the other products in the Snooper range and harks back to the traditional days of an actual radar and laser detector rather than being database driven. This has some plus and minus points that it is worth being aware of.

PLUS

  • No updates/downloads needed
  • Detects all mobile traps (if firing)
  • Will tell you which Gatso cameras are active

MINUS

  • False radar alerts
  • Shorter range warnings, can be too late
  • Will not alert to fixed digital cameras

To summarise, since it is not database driven it cannot alert to camera that don’t use radar or laser like the Truvelo cameras which work on sensors embedded in the road or the average speed SPECS cameras that use CCTV calculated over time and distance. The distance to the camera it gives will also depend partly on the strength of signal being given off by say a Gatso camera and the prevailing traffic conditions at the time which bounce the signal around. However there are no updates and it will tell you which Gatso cameras are active and which are dummy boxes or switch off. It has been designed for use across Europe by be aware this type of device is illegal in many European countries which could result in confiscation and an on the spot fine.

So how does it perform, well compared to radar detectors Snooper have done in the past it is one of the better ones and I would say performs on par with the Snooper S5R they may some years ago. If you’re doing 100mph on the motorway or a dual carriage way (naughty naught) then it’s not going to give you sufficient radar warning to avoid being done by a fixed Gatso because your unlikely to be able to respond and brake sufficiently in time although it would get you within 3 point territory rather than a straight ban. This is more useful for those doing 50mph in a 40 limit area and to remind you generally of cameras that you may be aware of but are liable to forget due to dealing with other traffic considerations. This device and radar detectors in general are good fun for telling you which of the variable speed limit cameras on the M25 gantrys are active!

It has the usual basics of volume and brightness adjustment with visual alerts and audio warnings. You get a windscreen and dash mount in the box so you can choose either, we feel the dash mount is quite discreet and a nice touch which most other traditional radar & laser detectors lack. If you are looking for something to run alongside a sat nav, particularly one that has a camera database on it, then this is a good companion for physical detection.
