As you approach a fixed speed safety camera the unit will begin to emit a voice alert or your chosen audible alert at your preset alert distance. As you move closer to the fixed speed safety camera the ‘beeping’ will quicken. At the same time the LED matrix display on the front edge  will indicate the speed limit at that location and will then begin to count down the distance to that location.

There are a few clever settings even on this entry level model so that you are only alerted to cameras on your side of the road and that if you are travelling under 20mph you will not get any alerts, which is useful if you are in traffic slowly passing a speed camera for example although this is also a mute button for such a situation. If approaching a speed camera you are travelling under the speed limit then after your initial audio alert the Pantera will only give you visual warnings as you continue to approach the camera. This is called the Smart Audio setting and can be switched off if you wish.

The volume is easily adjustable on the menu but the rest of the menu navigation is a little fiddly and a good read of the manual on the CD that comes in the box is advised when looking at this but the unit will remember your preferences once set although to be honest it works fine with the default settings as it comes out of the box. Since a speeding fine costs £75 these days (£60 fine and £15 victim surcharge!) for less that the cold hard cash price of a ticket, not to mention the points, you cannot go far wrong with this an entry level gadget that now has free lifetime Aura speed camera database updates.
