Geoff Hoon set to replace Fixed Cameras with Average Speed Cameras
Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon looks set to replace hundreds of fixed cameras with the average speed cameras which are seen to be fairer on motorists and also encourages safer driving. He acknowledged that the traditional cameras were a source of great resentment to many drivers. He noted that the average speed cameras were generally adhered to by most motorists.
Mr Hoon said he was himself an enthusiastic driver notching up around 15,000
miles per year. He also admitted that he was considering reducing the drink drive limit and bringing in harsher fixed paenalties for those caught speeding exessively.
Hoon once had points on his licence after being caught doing 42mph in a 30mph limit. A few months later the council had changed the speed limit on the road concerned to a 40mph limit which Hoon admitted still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. He feels that the people targeted by the speed cameras should be the habitual offenders who seriously break the rules.
