200,000 People Could Get Speed Camera Refund
Lots of people like to come up with excuses for speeding, anything and everything and most are pretty weak really, but Simon Grills's situation is different. He was caught on camera and given a £60 fine but the case ended up being dropped because the sign used to alert drivers to the drop in speed limit from 70mph to 50mph is unlit at night.
The light was broken way back in November 05. This means that there are around 214,000 drivers who have been fined for speeding at night while the sign was unlit! Interestingly enough the lights have still not been repaired and approx 500 motorists per day are receiving tickets. Hugh Bladon, of the Association of British Drivers, said: "People can lose jobs when they get a driving ban, with knock-on effects like divorce and homelessness."
Simon, was caught in September 2006 driving at 77mph in his BMW 3 Series. "When I got flashed I couldn't work out how I'd missed the sign," he said. "Then it clicked - it's simply not visible at night." Simon devoted 300 hours to the legal battle, Highways Agency bosses have now pledged that the lights will be fixed "over the next few days".
