  Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon looks set to replace hundreds of fixed cameras with the average speed cameras which are seen to be fairer on motorists and also encourages safer driving.

  Thames Valley Safer Roads Partership say that road safety campaigners are are very much in favour of speed cameras in Wokingham. This is in response to the news that the Borough Council have decided that they may ban the cameras.

In the past 18 months more than 12 cameras have been targeted by incensed drivers, costing the tax payers mant thousands of pounds to repair them. The average cost per camera to be repaired is in the region of £15,000 and in some areas the cameras are coming under repeated attacks.

Thursday 23rd October 2008 Swindon Council Calls a Halt to its Speed Cameras
   
  This is the first council in Britain to stop the fixed camera funding. All of the monies raised by the cameras goes directly to the Government and they then give amounts of the monies to the councils to be used on their road safety, the amounts being relevant to the accident statistics.

  A 51 year old man from West Yorkshire has won a case by proving that the speedgun had not been distanced tested before and after the 2 hour session which bagged the newly qualified Officer Shaun Greenwood 27 speeders.

  The new Specs3 speed cameras have been approved and will probably be arriving near you very soon. The cost per network is expected to be in the region of £300,000 but will be bound to pay for itself in a very short time!
   

   
07 October 2008 Speed cameras should be removed from the roads
   
 

A Portsmouth City Councillor says that speed cameras should be removed and replaced with mobile units as they are not working.Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson who is the leader of Portsmouth City Council has been discussing the future of speed cameras with other senior councillors.

   

   
Tuesday 30 September 2008 82mph wheelie in 30mph zone gets biker a ban
   
 

Steven Skilton aged 22 was captured seven times exceeding 30mph, on 3 of  these occasions he was doing speeds of over 80mph. Mr Skilton was disqualified from driving for 18 months at Southampton Magistrates Court, he was fined £600 and had 39 points put on his licence.

 

   
Monday 29th September 2008 Speed case won by Traffic Cop
   
 

Mark Treleaven-Jones, a Traffic Officer with North Wales Police in Bangor, has won his case for speeding through traffic works. On Feb 4 th he was caught speeding at 56mph in a 40mph temporary zone in Conwy.

   

   
Tuesday 16th September 2008 78 Points on Licence For London Boss
   
  A 48yr old man who runs a company in London has managed to clock up 78 penalty points on his driving licence. He was captured repeatedly by two safety cameras in London. Mr Henry Cole was caught by the cameras no less than 13 times between April and July 2007.
   

   
Monday 15th September 2008 Average Speed Cameras For All Roads
   
  The Average speed cameras track drivers over long distances and are to be reportedly introduced all over the country replacing the current Gatsos. At the moment these cameras are used where road works are taking place, but plans are afoot to use them in accident black spots, residential areas and on motorways

  A speed camera was attacked by an arsenist on a road in Coventry. It is thought that around £4,000 worth of damage has been done on top of the fact that drivers lives were put at risk.

Merseyside has added over 30 new speed camera sites in a bid to cut down on deaths and serious injury on the roads. They also have 2 new Safety Camera vans which will cover a further 52 locations. This is in addition to the previous one safety van which covered 30 sites.

Monday 30th June 2008 Sat-navs to speak up if drivers turn on to dangerous roads
   
 

Some of the most dangerous roads in Britain will be programmed into satellite navigation devices to warn drivers when they stray on to them. The European Road Assessment Programme, is a non-profit road safety group, and is in talks with several sat-nav companies with a view to allowing them to use its risk map, which has just been published.

Vikki Fielden, 49, a graphic designer, was caught doing 36mph in a 30mph zone as she drove through Huddersfield West Yorks, in June 2006. She rejected the fine and three points because her husband, Ian Fielden, a university researcher, questioned the accuracy of the speed camera involved.
